Howdy! I'm Michelle Stewart and Chalkboard Quilts is my baby! Even though I have always had a fascination for quilts and quilting, I didn't learn how until well into my adult life. The only person I knew growing up who quilted was my Great Grandmother Millie and she hated it! For her, quilting had been a childhood chore that she had to complete before she could go out to play, so needless to say, I wasn't getting lessons from her! I finally had the opportunity to take lessons when a quilt shop opened in town in 2006 and since taking a beginning quilt class, I have been hooked! That quilt shop eventually closed and after several years I decided to take the leap and start my own. My Mother, Kitty, who is my business partner and best bud, graciously allowed me to have some space in her embroidery shop (check out Monogramsbymeandmom.com) and my wonderful husband, Shayne, let me quit my job (oh yes he did!) so I could pursue my passion. Without the two of them, this crazy dream of mine would have never come true. I am one amazingly blessed woman and not a day goes by that I don't know it!
Although I can honestly say that I love every bit of the process of making quilts, the quilting is my favorite part. After years of slogging my quilts through my trusty Bernina sewing machine, I have finally added an APQS long arm named Lucey.
My shop is tiny and I'm okay with that. Other than quilting, my favorite thing to do is get to know my customers. Being located in a tourist town, I get to visit with people from all over the world. If I had a huge store with tons of staff to manage, that just wouldn't be an option and I'm not willing to give that up! Mom and I often joke that if we got paid by the word, we would be millionaires! The tag line for Chalkboard Quilts is Friends, Fabric and Fun and Friends is first for a reason, they're the most important part of my business!
Come by and visit with us any time! We can't wait to meet you!
